Rats Chew Through Drainage System To Gain Entry
Rodent control, survey & proofing needed for rats at a client’s address in the Hampshire village of Bordon, I received an urgent call out during the Christmas period for noises in the house.
Upon inspection, it was discovered that rats had been chewing through the drainage system in the client’s downstairs toilet.
Our client had attempted to patch the problem and stop the rats from entering the house by wrapping tape around the pipe work.
This stop gap solution could never work as rats have large, constantly growing incisors that are well-suited for gnawing.
Rats Teeth – Constantly Growing Incisors
Rats’ teeth incisors are harder on the front surface than on the back, which allows them to gnaw through a variety of materials with ease. Additionally, rats’ incisors are self-sharpening, which helps to maintain their ability to chew and gnaw.
This gnawing ability is important for rats to obtain food and build their nests, as they are known to gnaw on a variety of materials like wood, plastic, and even metal.

Borden Rats Using Drainage System For Entry
Initial observations suggested that the issue was a drainage fault. Upon further investigation, it was found that there was a large hole in the wall of the inspection chamber and clear evidence of rat activity.
Rats use drainage systems because they provide a safe and easy way for them to travel and find food and shelter. Drainage systems, such as sewers offer protection from predators and the elements, and they also often lead to areas where there is a concentration of food sources, such as rubbish or compost.
Additionally, rats are good swimmers and can easily navigate through water, making drainage systems an attractive option for them to move around in.

Establishing Responsibility For Fixing Drainage Faults
As the drainage line was a shared line, the water board was responsible for fixing any faults. They were contacted and have agreed to fix the chamber. However, the actual line is the responsibility of the client and a survey will be needed.
To address the immediate issue, a temporary patch was placed on the hole and a one-way valve was fitted on the client’s drainage line to prevent rats from entering. The client has since reported no further issues.
It is important to note that 80% of domestic rat issues are related to drain faults. While it may be unpleasant, it is crucial to regularly check and maintain the drainage system to prevent infestations. As a pest control service, we prioritise the safety and well-being of our clients by identifying and addressing the root cause of the problem.
